ABOUT GHANA NATIONAL COUNCIL

Our History

Ghana National Council (GNC) is a community of Ghanaians that began meeting in the 1960’s as the Ghana Student’s Union; to create a home base for themselves and others that migrated from Ghana to Chicago. The council was formed to assist fellow Ghanaians and Africans with resources in citizenship, employment, housing, education, health, and fellowship.

The need for a national organization became obvious to a group of concerned Ghanaians in the mid to late 1960’s.

Volunteers joined forces to set up the Ghana Student Union (GSU), which immediately rallied support and goodwill in the community.  Representations were established with the Ghana Government and with the Ghana Embassy in Washington.

In January of 1984, the various Ghanaian organizations in Illinois joined together and established as the Ghana National Council of Metropolitan Chicago. The council operates as a 501(c)(3) organization granted by the Internal Revenue Service.

Since then a three representatives from the respective affiliate community organizations collectively structure the Ghana National Council. As a organization we created programs and events including GhanaFest®️, Ghana Football Tournament, Ghana Independence Celebrations and award programs, Health and Wellness Fairs, Youth Back to School Conferences, Town Hall Meetings, The Ghanaian Community Health Clinic and much more.

The Ghana National Council meets every 1st Sunday of the month and welcomes the community to participate as visitors.
